A credit card annual fee is a yearly charge your card issuer bills to keep your account open and active. Fees typically range from no annual fee to nearly $800, depending on the card's rewards and benefits. For the right cardholder, an annual fee isn’t a cost to dread — it’s an investment that can pay back far more than you put in.

An airline alliance is a formal partnership among multiple airlines that allows them to coordinate schedules, share routes and airport facilities and recognize each other’s frequent flyer programs. The three major global alliances—Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam—collectively cover nearly every region on earth, giving travelers seamless connections and the ability to earn and redeem rewards across dozens of carriers. For points and miles enthusiasts, alliances are especially powerful because they unlock partner award redemptions. An all-inclusive resort is a hotel property where one upfront price covers your room, meals, drinks and most on-site activities. Rather than paying separately for breakfast, pool access or evening entertainment, guests pay a single rate and have access to most of the resort's offerings throughout their stay. Popular in destinations like Mexico, the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic, all-inclusive resorts are designed to simplify trip budgeting and keep everything in one place.

An authorized user is someone who has been granted permission to make purchases on another person's credit card account. They receive their own card with their name on it, but the primary cardholder remains solely responsible for paying the bill. For example, a parent might add a teenager as an authorized user to give them a head start on building credit history.

Capital One miles are the transferable rewards currency earned with select Capital One travel credit cards. They can be redeemed at a flat rate of 1 cent per mile toward travel purchases or transferred to more than 15 airline and hotel loyalty programs, where strategic redemptions can unlock more value. Most Capital One travel cards earn at least 2 miles per dollar on everyday spending, and TPG values Capital One miles at 1.85 cents each, per our June 2026 valuations.

Both charge cards and credit cards are payment cards that let you make purchases and pay later. The key difference is repayment: charge cards require you to pay the full balance every month, while credit cards let you carry a balance from cycle to cycle (with interest). Charge cards typically carry no preset spending limit, while credit cards come with a fixed limit set by the issuer.

A checked bag is luggage you hand over to the airline at check-in to be stowed in the aircraft's cargo hold — as opposed to a carry-on, which you bring into the cabin. As of 2026, most U.S. airlines charge about $45–$50 per checked bag each way in economy, though fees vary by airline, route and fare class. Travelers can often avoid or offset these fees with a co-branded airline credit card that waives the first checked bag, a premium travel card that offers an airline fee or travel statement credit, or a higher fare class.

Every credit card billing cycle ends on a closing date, the day your issuer tallies your charges, calculates your statement balance and generates your monthly bill. The due date is a separate, later deadline: the date by which you must pay at least the minimum amount owed to avoid late fees. The window between these two dates is called the grace period, which federal law requires to be at least 21 days.

A credit score is a three-digit number — typically ranging from 300 to 850 — that summarizes your creditworthiness based on your borrowing and repayment history. It is calculated by credit bureaus using factors like payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history and types of accounts. The higher your score, the more likely you are to qualify for premium credit cards, lower interest rates and better financial products.

Cash back is a type of credit card reward that returns a percentage of your spending as a dollar-value credit, deposit or check — rather than as points or miles. Most cash back cards offer a flat rate between 1% and 2% on all purchases, though some offer higher rates in rotating or fixed bonus categories such as groceries, dining or gas. Unlike points, cash back carries a fixed value: 1% cash back on a $100 purchase is always worth exactly $1.

Credit card churning is the practice of opening new credit cards primarily to earn a welcome offer, then closing them before the next annual fee is due and repeating the cycle with other cards. The strategy can generate large quantities of points and miles quickly, but most major issuers have built restrictions specifically to limit how often it works. A more sustainable approach involves selecting cards you plan to keep long-term, so you collect the welcome offer and ongoing value.

A digital nomad is someone who works remotely using technology while traveling continuously, with no fixed home base. Instead of commuting to an office, nomads build their work lives around coworking spaces, short-term rentals and laptop-friendly cafes across the globe. Most prioritize destinations with a low cost of living, reliable high-speed internet and an active community of like-minded remote workers.

Delta SkyMiles is the frequent flyer program operated by Delta Air Lines, allowing members to earn miles on flights, hotel stays, car rentals, co-branded credit card spending and everyday purchases. Miles can be redeemed for flights, seat upgrades, vacation packages and more through Delta and its airline partners. Unlike some loyalty currencies, SkyMiles never expire as long as your account remains open.

Airport lounges operated by Delta Air Lines under the Delta Sky Club brand give eligible travelers a quiet retreat from the terminal, with complimentary food, beverages, Wi-Fi and workspaces. With more than 50 locations across major U.S. airports, the network is widely regarded as the best domestic airline lounge program. Access is available through eligible American Express credit cards, paid annual memberships (for Medallion status holders), Delta One cabin travel and select partner airline agreements — though visit caps introduced in 2025 have changed the calculus for many cardholders.

Each airline ticket is assigned a single letter code called a fare class (also known as a fare bucket or fare code) that determines a seat's price, refund rules, upgrade eligibility, baggage allowance and miles-earning potential. Common anchors include Y for full-fare economy, J for full-fare business, and F for full-fare first class, with discounted fares using other letter codes that carry stricter restrictions. Award and upgrade seats use their own separate fare class letters, which is why finding the right availability matters when booking with points or miles.

A foreign transaction fee is a charge added by credit card issuers when a purchase is processed outside the United States, typically 1%–3% of the transaction amount. The fee applies whether you are physically abroad or buying online from a foreign vendor. Most premium travel cards have eliminated this fee entirely.

One of the world's largest hotel loyalty programs, Marriott Bonvoy was formed in 2019 when Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest and Ritz-Carlton Rewards merged under one umbrella. Members earn points on qualifying hotel stays and through cobranded credit cards, then redeem them for free nights, airline miles and experiences across more than 9,000 properties in roughly 140 countries. MileagePlus is United Airlines’ frequent flyer program, letting members earn miles on flights, credit card spending, hotel stays, dining and shopping, then redeem them for award flights on United and its 40-plus Star Alliance and non-alliance partner airlines. With over 100 million members worldwide, it is one of the largest airline loyalty programs.

Points redemption is the process of exchanging rewards points earned through a credit card or loyalty program for travel, cash back, gift cards or other rewards. The value you receive depends on how you redeem — transferring points to airline and hotel partners typically yields the highest return, often 1 to 2.5+ cents per point, while cash back or gift cards usually return just 0.5 to 1 cent per point. Choosing the right redemption method is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a points and miles enthusiast.

United Premier status is the elite membership program within United Airlines' MileagePlus loyalty program, structured into four published tiers: Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum and Premier 1K. Members earn status by accumulating Premier qualifying points (PQPs) and Premier qualifying flights (PQFs) during a calendar year, through a mix of flying United and its partners and spending on eligible cobranded credit cards. Once earned, status is valid through the remainder of the earning year, the full following year and through January 31 of the year after.

A rewards program is a loyalty system offered by airlines, hotels, credit card issuers or retailers that lets you accumulate points, miles or cash back in exchange for purchases or travel activity. Once you’ve earned enough, those rewards can be redeemed for flights, hotel stays, statement credits, merchandise and more. Most programs are free to join, and the value you get out of them depends heavily on which rewards you earn and how you choose to spend them.

A shopping portal is an online platform operated by an airline, hotel program, credit card issuer or third party that rewards members with bonus points, miles or cash back when they click through to a participating retailer and make a purchase. The rewards are earned on top of any points or miles you already earn by paying with a travel rewards credit card, making every qualifying purchase an opportunity to double your return. Major airline and credit card portals partner with hundreds to over 1,200 retailers, covering everything from everyday essentials to large electronics.

Southwest Airlines' frequent flyer program, Rapid Rewards, lets members earn points on flights, qualifying partner purchases and cobranded credit card spending, then redeem them for award flights with no blackout dates. Rather than a fixed award chart, the program uses dynamic pricing, so point costs shift based on demand and the fare you select. Its standout perk is the Companion Pass, which lets a designated companion fly on every Southwest flight with you for just the applicable taxes and fees for the remainder of the year it's earned, plus the full following calendar year.

The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the most valuable perks in any U.S. airline loyalty program. It lets a designated companion fly with you on virtually every Southwest flight for free (just paying taxes and fees from $5.60 each way) for the remainder of the calendar year in which you earn it, plus the entire following calendar year. You earn it by accumulating 135,000 qualifying points or flying 100 qualifying one-way flights in a single calendar year through flights, credit card spending, shopping, and other eligible activities.

Travel insurance is a catch-all term for a policy that protects you from financial losses caused by unexpected events before or during a trip. Coverage typically includes trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical expenses, evacuation and delayed or lost baggage, though benefits vary by policy and provider. Standalone policies generally cost between 4% and 10% of your total nonrefundable trip expenses, with the current average sitting around 6%.

A U.S. government trusted traveler program, TSA PreCheck, gives approved members access to dedicated expedited security lanes at more than 200 participating airports. Members can keep their shoes, belts and light jackets on and leave laptops and liquids in their bags while clearing security. A five-year membership costs $85 or less for new applicants, and many travel credit cards offer a statement credit that covers the enrollment fee entirely.

An upgrade certificate is a voucher or credit issued by an airline or hotel loyalty program that allows a member to move to a higher cabin or room category, typically without paying the full price difference in cash or points. These certificates are generally reserved for top-tier elite members as a status benefit, though some programs tie them to milestone thresholds reached through a combination of flying and credit card spend. Examples include American Airlines' Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs), Delta's Regional and Global Upgrade Certificates, United's PlusPoints and World of Hyatt's suite upgrade awards.

Operated by United Airlines, the United Club is a network of more than 45 airport lounges at major United hubs and select international airports. Members and eligible travelers enjoy complimentary food and beverages, high-speed Wi-Fi and workspaces, with select locations also offering showers and private relaxation areas. Access is available through a paid membership, a cobranded United credit card, qualifying MileagePlus elite status, or a same-day premium-cabin boarding pass on United or a Star Alliance partner airline.

Voluntourism is a form of travel that combines tourism with structured volunteer work, allowing travelers to contribute to a community, ecosystem, or cause during their trip. Programs range from a single-afternoon conservation cleanup to a multi-week humanitarian placement in education, healthcare, or disaster relief. According to Grand View Research, the global voluntourism market was valued at $848.9 million in 2023 and is projected to reach $1.27 billion by 2030, growing at roughly 6% annually.

A welcome offer is a bonus — points, miles or cash back — that a credit card issuer gives new eligible cardholders for meeting a minimum spending requirement within a set window after account opening, typically 90 days to six months. For example, a card might offer 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first three months. Welcome offers are one of the fastest ways to build a large rewards balance and are often the primary reason to open a new travel card.
