Unfortunately, devaluations happen often, and programs aren’t required to notify members before they take effect. (Though sometimes, they do — and we’re grateful for that.)
So how can you protect your points?
It’s practically impossible to completely avoid devaluations, but these tips can help:
Don’t hoard your points. The No. 1 lesson here is that your points and miles will never be worth more than they are right now. Treating them like a long-term investment can be a big mistake.
If you hear about a devaluation, book ASAP. Take a cue from the many points-savvy loyalists who were able to beat the price hikes and lock in the best award rates when this program recently announced its changes a couple months before they took effect.
