We often remember the negative changes to credit cards and loyalty programs when they happen. But sometimes, programs implement changes that are positive.
For example, changes to the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card implemented near the beginning of 2024 have been a net positive for me. I can easily use the biannual Hilton resort credits (one of which I used this fall at the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, pictured above) and the quarterly airfare statement credits. Together, these credits provide more value than the card’s annual fee.
On the loyalty side, I love that American Airlines AAdvantage members can now apply systemwide upgrades online. Likewise, Hyatt loyalists can now apply suite upgrade awards online. While these seem like small changes, they make a huge difference in how easy it is to use these benefits.
One way to avoid negative points and miles changes is to collect transferable rewards, and only move them to hotel and airline programs once you’re ready to book.
