As with many debates, the answer is, “It depends.” Consider what purchases you will make with the card, how you will redeem your points and which benefits you will use.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred has a $95 annual fee but offers a $50 annual hotel credit when you book through Chase Travel℠. Meanwhile, the Chase Sapphire Reserve has a $550 annual fee but offers a $300 annual travel credit, access to Chase Sapphire Lounges and Priority Pass Select membership.
Both cards offer bonus points on travel and dining, although the Chase Sapphire Reserve earns slightly more points on some travel purchases. With both cards, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to select airline and hotel partners at a 1:1 ratio.
However, if you plan to redeem points through Chase Travel, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a higher redemption rate of 1.5 cents per point, while the Chase Sapphire Preferred only offers 1.25 cents per point.
Both cards currently offer an elevated sign-up bonus of 75,000 bonus points when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months. However, you can only have one of these cards, so it’s critical to determine which is best for you.
