However, what could turn into the next big aviation story is percolating north of the border. That’s where a pilot strike at Air Canada could be imminent, threatening to virtually ground Canada’s biggest airline in a move that sows chaos for flight schedules across the country.
What about in the U.S., where strike talk has also hit the news cycle? It’s true that flight attendant union negotiations have reached an impasse at two big airlines, but TPG’s David Slotnick explains why there’s still plenty of runway left for the process to play out on this side of the border.
For now, the four biggest U.S. carriers do have to contend with a federal probe of the “fairness, transparency, predictability, and competitiveness of airlines’ rewards programs.” We’ve long suspected the probe was coming, but details from its formal launch suggest some attempt to regulate those loyalty programs may lie ahead.
Elsewhere, there’s one new airport name to tell you about. The title tweak to this Oklahoma airport is subtle, but it continues a trend that’s played out across the country in recent years. Harriet Baskas takes a look at what’s driving these changes at U.S. airports.
We’ll close out with the latest airline map updates. The headliner this time is American Airlines’ upcoming summer schedule to Europe, which includes five new European routes (but only one pin returing to the map).
