The Oneworld alliance will add a new member airline in the coming months.

Muscat-based carrier Oman Air announced on Monday that it will join the group of 13 airlines that team up to offer flyers a range of benefits.

The news was revealed at an annual meeting of the alliance, which is currently being held in Doha, Qatar.

Oman Air's integration into Oneworld shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Last year, the airline revealed intentions to join the alliance and even asked for Qatar Airways' support to bring the carrier into the pact.

By joining Oneworld, Oman Air can offer extensive connectivity around the globe through partners, such as American Airlines, British Airways and Qantas.

In addition to expanded connections with flights beyond the airline's network, frequent flyers will be rewarded with reciprocal earning and redemption privileges.

For instance, members of American's AAdvantage loyalty program should soon be able to earn miles for flights operated by Oman Air.

Members should also have the opportunity to redeem miles on Oman Air flights.

To date, the best way to redeem miles for Oman Air flights has been through the Air Canada Aeroplan program.

The process of Oman joining Oneworld is projected to be complete by 2024, and we'll update the post when a more concrete timeline becomes available.

Oman Air serves roughly 50 destinations, including major cities such as London and Bangkok — though none in North America. The airline operates a fleet of around 50 aircraft, ranging from the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to the Airbus A330 to the Boeing 737.

The airline consistently wins high praise for its long-haul business-class product (Apex Suites), and some of the Dreamliners even have a small first-class cabin.

In recent years, the Oneworld alliance has grown with the addition of Alaska Airlines and Royal Air Maroc, though the pact has lost a key member in South America, LATAM.
