Quick summary

Delta Air Lines is giving you another reason to download (or update) its mobile app.

The Atlanta-based carrier just announced its latest app release, version 7.0, which will be available to users starting this week on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

The latest version of the Fly Delta app includes several highly requested features, beginning with support for Apple's Live Activities.

These timely notifications stay on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island (i.e., the notch) on supported iPhones, giving travelers up-to-the-minute statuses on the day of travel. United was the first U.S. airline to implement Live Activities, and several others have since joined in.

Delta, however, has been one of the largest airline holdouts, so it's great to see the carrier getting with the times. Apple first debuted Live Activities as part of iOS 16 in September 2022.

Personally, I love using Live Activities to monitor my flight status, so I'm excited to see how Delta's implementation works.

Other key app updates include the ability for top-tier Medallion elite members to apply global and regional upgrade certificates to their flights during the booking process. Furthermore, the app will also show upgrade certificate availability during the search process, mirroring the same functionality that's available on Delta.com today.

As part of this change — and seemingly to encourage more app engagement — Delta is making a big policy update regarding Choice Benefits, which are the perks that Platinum and Diamond Medallions receive after qualifyidng for status.

Going forward, Choice Benefits will exclusively be chosen via the Fly Delta app; there will be no more selections via the website.

Delta says that several other updates will debut on its app in the coming months. These include more timely flight status updates (definitely easier said than done) and better support for irregular operations.

When flights are delayed or canceled, the app will soon let you join the standby list for an earlier flight departing within 24 hours before your originally confirmed flight. Note that this feature, which will be launching in June, is limited to domestic travel only.

Delta will also introduce a new document center on the app that will serve as a one-stop hub for figuring out what documents are required for an international trip. This feature will also include notifications about any forms or tasks that are required before jetting off to your destination.

"We're continuously improving the Fly Delta app to make it the ultimate travel companion, enhancing every step of the customer journey to ensure seamless and connected travel with Delta. As we announced at CES 2025, the next step in this journey will be leveraging Delta-centric AI — Delta Concierge — for an elevated human touch to supercharge the customer experience, beginning later this year," said Eric Phillips, said chief digital officer, in a statement.
