My primary concern when checking luggage is usually minimizing fees. So, if I have an airline elite status that lets me check multiple bags for free on a flight, I’ll often check my husband’s bag in addition to mine.
Likewise, when we redeem Atmos Rewards points for transborder flights on Porter, we’ll sometimes book the least expensive award that doesn’t include any checked luggage for one of us and a more expensive award that includes two checked bags for the other.
Many other couples, families and friend groups I know use similar strategies to reduce checked baggage fees. But there is one important aspect you might be forgetting.
A reader wrote in recently after an airline inadvertently checked his wife’s suitcase under his child’s name, and this resulted in a major headache when the airline damaged their luggage.
In short, while each parent’s flight was covered by baggage insurance — and they could have checked all the luggage in their names at no additional cost — the child’s ticket wasn’t booked via an eligible method, which led to the claim being denied.
