If you’re a points and miles person like me (and all of us at TPG), you’re probably quick to grab the bill at dinner and willing to let your fellow diners pay you back afterward so you earn valuable points or miles.
Recently, when I’ve done this, a few friends have been curious about why I toss down my American Express® Gold Card instead of a “fancier” card or a cobranded hotel or airline card.
The Amex Gold is my go-to card for nearly everything, especially dining out, because I earn 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide**. When I’m not eating out, it’s also the card I use at the supermarket since I also earn 4 points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets**.
I love the card because I’m quickly earning points that I can transfer to participating hotel and airline programs I love, giving me more travel options than earning with just one program alone. (And transferring my American Express Membership Rewards points has helped me snag some great deals on business-class flights I otherwise couldn’t afford.)

On top of earning for all the food I eat (why am I always hungry?), I love some of the card’s other valuable benefits I can use at home and while traveling.
When it comes down to it, I tell my friends to get the card that makes the most sense for their lives and how they spend their money. For me (and my stomach), it’s the Amex Gold.
