It’s the end of an era at Southwest Airlines … and there are some of you who might be happy about it (others, not so much).
Today is the long-awaited day when the airline bids farewell to open seating. Goodbye to the days of walking on board and hunting around for the best seat.
Starting today, Southwest will assign seats just like all of the other major airlines. And there are a ton of other changes going live, too.
The 24-hour alarm to check in: If you’ve always had to set your alarm to check in one day before your Southwest flight to score a good spot in the boarding order … this might be the best news of all.
Speaking of boarding: Big changes are coming to Southwest’s unique, single-file process for boarding its planes.
The bad news: There are some customers who will have to pay if they want to select a seat. Here’s how you can avoid that.
Extra-legroom hard launch: We’ve been talking for many, many months about how Southwest is adding extra-legroom seats to its planes. I got a chance to try them out last year and wrote about whether they’re worth it.
Fun fact: It’s been almost five years since Southwest launched service to a new city. But that’s about to change. Next month, it’ll start flying to this tropical paradise — and add another new Caribbean island later this year.
Here’s some more information about the big changes at this airline:
