Editor’s note: This morning our hearts are with everyone impacted by Hurricane Melissa. We’ll continue to follow this development and we encourage all who are able to support relief efforts through trusted organizations.
We love a good transfer bonus. These occasional offers allow you to get even more out of your transferable points and miles. But they’re only available for a limited amount of time, usually about a month.
I’ve used transfer bonuses plenty of times, especially with two of my favorite airline programs — Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club — to get incredible deals on flights across the pond. (I’m talking about 6,000 miles for a last-minute trip to London. How could I afford not to?)
But I’ve also made a few mistakes with these — specifically, not paying attention to when a transfer bonus ends. During a recent Chase Ultimate Rewards offer with a 20% transfer bonus, I calculated what I’d need for the flight I wanted, but got lazy and didn’t make the transfer right then.
Later on, when I tried to book, the offer had expired and I didn’t have enough Chase points (without the bonus) to get what I’d planned — and that difference meant settling for an eight-hour flight in a seat near the lavatory instead of in business class.
