It’s a terrible trend in travel … feeling like you are being nickel-and-dimed at every turn.
Want to check a bag? That will be $30 on average. Want a seat assignment? Well, that will cost you more, too, if you don’t have elite status or hold the right credit card.
But now you can add a new one to the list: an upcharge to have a reclining seat in economy. This week, WestJet rolled out its plan to reconfigure 43 planes it purchased recently. Those planes will get a new premium cabin, but they’ll also have a beyond-basic section at the back with seats that don’t recline. This is rare among North American carriers — usually only a handful of seats (like in the emergency-exit rows) don’t recline for safety reasons.
On some WestJet flights, you will soon have to pay for “premium” or “extended comfort” seats if you want to recline.
