One of the best ways to get the most bang for your buck (or miles) is to book a stopover: a short stay in one city — on your way to another — without paying extra.
Turkish Airlines: You can score a free hotel night (or two, depending on your ticket) in Istanbul on your way to another city in Europe, Africa, Asia or beyond.
TAP Air Portugal will let you spend up to 10 days in Portugal when passing through Lisbon or Porto without an extra airfare charge.
You can also make stopovers in Dubai, Madrid and other cities, too. Be sure to check out our full guide.
What about unofficial stopovers?
I also am a big fan of what I like to call “unofficial” stopovers. As a regular American Airlines flyer, I frequently make London connections to British Airways. I’ll often book a layover of just under 24 hours, allowing me almost a full day in London.
You can be similarly crafty with other airlines and cities. My tip: When searching, look for the longest trip duration and see how the price and itinerary compare.
