And while it might seem like a great option to have access to up to 20 different transfer partners, here’s my secret: You don’t need to understand or master all of them.
There are many transfer partners available to me that I’ve never even created an account with. Why? They either don’t provide value to me, or I’ve always found a better option.
Choose an airline based on which airport(s) you fly from: If one airline dominates, see if its loyalty program (or a partner airline’s program) is a transfer partner of any popular credit card programs.
Add an airline with great rates to places you want to travel: While British Airways is convenient from my home airport in London, its high surcharges make long-haul award flights costly (especially for premium seats), so I’ve adopted Air Canada Aeroplan. Even though I rarely visit Canada (or fly Air Canada), the Aeroplan program has fixed award rates and lots of partners that cover the places I like to go.
Pick a hotel program that fits your needs: I used to favor Hilton Honors for its elite perks and ease of earning points, but rising redemption rates (sometimes 200,000 points per night) sent me looking elsewhere. Even though it has fewer locations worldwide, I’ve shifted to World of Hyatt, which offers a fixed award chart starting at just 3,500 points per night and 1:1 transfers from Chase and Bilt.
