When friends and family ask me for advice about how to use their credit card points, I recommend they never transfer them to an airline or hotel partner program without an immediate use in mind.
Why? Even if there’s a huge transfer bonus on offer, you risk these airline or hotel programs increasing their redemption rates without notice, which unfortunately can and does happen. Also, the seats or rooms that are available right now may not be available in the future. And remember, transfers from credit card programs to partner programs cannot be reversed.
Mileage Plan miles are some of the hardest airlines miles to earn, as Alaska doesn’t partner with any major credit card program outside of Bilt Rewards. Alaska miles are enormously valuable thanks to terrific partner redemption rates.
While there is of course a risk Mileage Plan could make negative changes to the program in the future, if you have a stash of Amex points and are feeling game, now is the time to look into Alaska’s loyalty program and consider breaking the cardinal rule one time only before June 30, when it will once again become harder to earn Alaska miles.
