Despite what you may have heard, waiting to book on a Tuesday afternoon or a random Sunday morning doesn’t magically grant cheap airfare. When you plan to travel matters much more than when you book the ticket.
General rules of thumb:
It’s usually less expensive to fly midweek.
U.S. domestic flights will be cheapest one to two months before you depart.
You’ll want to book international flights three to five months in advance for the best deals.
For instance, it can be cheaper to fly to Asia in the spring or fall, and you’ll often find better deals on flights to Europe in the cooler fall and winter months.
However, there are deals out there all year. You just have to find them.
I’ve personally found luck using Google Flights to compare a flight’s current price to historical data. I’ll also track specific routes on certain dates and set price alerts to receive emails when a flight’s price increases or decreases. Be ready to jump whenever the price is low.
Forget the old tales promising cheaper tickets if you book on a certain day. If you know where you want to go, lean on Google Flights to compare prices or leverage the Google Explore map to pick an airport with cheap flights.
