I recently checked off an aviation bucket list dream: flying in true international first class (which is rare these days) on the iconic Queen of the Skies, the Boeing 747-8, between the U.S. and Europe — and you can do it, too.
This ticket would cost over $10,000 if I paid cash, but obviously, that’s not how we do things at The Points Guy. Instead, I booked this flight of a lifetime for 100,000 Aeroplan points and $207 in fees and taxes.
If you also want to do this, you may be excited to know that you can get the 100,000 Aeroplan points needed to book this same flight via the limited-time offer for 100,000 bonus points on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. This bonus is awarded after you spend $5,000 in the first three months from account opening.
Here’s how to book a flight like this, and if it was worth the points splurge.
How to book Lufthansa first class with points
You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Air Canada’s Aeroplan program, which requires just 90,000 points for flights to or from the East Coast or 100,000 points from the Midwest and West Coast.
Lufthansa usually only releases first-class seats to partner airline programs at the last minute, so you’ll need to be up for an adventure. However, I had no trouble finding seats a few days before my flight from Frankfurt to Houston.
Luckily, finding availability these days is pretty easy due to tools like Seats.aero and even the Lufthansa First dashboard on Points Path, which shows all available flights in one spot.
The luxurious first-class experience
This aviation bucket list moment was one of the best flights of my life — so please go check out the reel on Instagram to see the entire experience, including the dedicated First Class Terminal in Frankfurt (with a la carte dining, a cigar lounge, private nap rooms with real beds, and bubble baths with souvenir rubber ducks).
Not to mention that as a Lufthansa first-class passenger, I was driven across the airport tarmac in a private Porsche before boarding the 747 to sit in Row 1 in the nose of this famous aircraft.
And then, the $275-a-bottle Champagne and caviar flowed freely until I settled into the 81-inch bed for a nap; it was honestly more comfortable than my bed at home.
I know, it’s all completely over the top, but that’s the power of points, creating opportunities for “pinch me” moments that otherwise would never be possible, whether that’s first class on the 747, a trip with the family to a beach resort or whatever your heart desires.
