Flights of fancy: These new airline seats will wow you
by Eric Rosen, Director of travel content
Happy Saturday! Eric here, TPG’s director of travel content … and the site’s original managing editor from over a decade ago.
Back then, I thought recliner-style first-class seats were the height of sophistication. But in the years since, we’ve seen airlines introduce every manner of novel premium seating, from angled pods to self-contained suites.
In fact, I recently returned from a round-the-globe jaunt where I got to experience not one but two of the world’s newest business-class seats.
First up was Cathay Pacific’s gorgeous Aria Suites from London to Hong Kong, which only went into service in January. These spacious suites have closing privacy doors, 24-inch 4K entertainment screens with all kinds of functionality (including the ability to see which lavatories are occupied) and fabulous amenities like cozy Bamford bedding. Even better, if you have Cathay Pacific Asia Miles — which can be transferred from American Express, Bilt, Capital One and Citi — award space is plentiful.
Next, I flew Korean Air’s Prestige Suites 2.0 (how’s that for a name!), which sport closing privacy doors and plenty of tech bells and whistles. On my journey from Seoul, South Korea, to Vancouver, British Columbia, I pampered myself with the Graff amenity kit and dug into signature Korean dishes like hearty bibimbap.
Even more tantalizing is Air France’s new La Premiere (pictured above), one of the world’s most exclusive first-class experiences, which was just unveiled in Paris. These palatial fixtures have both armchairs and chaise lounges, not one but two 32-inch entertainment monitors, and a soupcon of French je ne sais quoi thanks to fancy frills like Sisley amenity kits and gourmet menus by Michelin-lauded chefs, including Dominique Crenn.
I’m so excited to see this new product for myself that my bags are practically already packed. If you’re excited too, check out these stories for more details:
