It’s a stunning reversal for an airline known for its folksy, down-home image and customer-friendly policies.
Until now, anyway. That’s because the bag-fee policy — which Southwest insisted was sacrosanct just a few months ago — may be the tip of the iceberg.
We just saw a surprise, no-notice devaluation on points earned on the carrier’s cheapest fares. And Southwest has warned of likely devaluations on the redemption side, too.
Of course, all that comes after Southwest had already announced the end of its open seating in favor of assigned seats — a shocking change in its own right.
The changes are a lot for Southwest loyalists to digest — but perhaps their biggest question may end up being, “Is this still the airline we fell in love with?”
One thing is for sure: If you’re planning to fly Southwest later this year, be sure to book before the changes kick in May 28. To get our full reporting on these changes and how they may affect your travel, you can read more here.
