January is a time for taking inventory of what’s working and adjusting what isn’t. And for many of us, that includes an overhaul of our credit card strategy.
I have about 20 cards in my wallet, so I do a pretty regular inventory and adjust my card strategy according to my current goals.
No matter what my earning strategy is, I can’t pass up the tremendous value I get each month from the Uber Cash and statement credits alone, which go a long way in offsetting the $325 annual fee (see rates and fees). By linking my card to my U.S. Uber account, I get $10 in Uber Cash each month, which I can use on any of my Amex cards to help cover the cost of an Uber Eats order. I also get up to $10 each month toward purchases at participating dining partners, up to $7 each month toward U.S. Dunkin’ purchases, and up to $100 each year (up to $50 bianually) toward purchases at U.S. restaurants participating in Resy. (Enrollment is required for select benefits.)
And whether I’m on the go and dining out or focused on cooking at home more, my Amex Gold’s earning rates can’t be beat. It earns 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent worldwide on dining (on up to $50,000 per year, then 1 point per dollar) and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per year, then 1 point per dollar). Since TPG’s January 2025 valuations peg Amex points at 2 cents apiece, I’m getting an 8% return on these purchases — much greater than what I earn with any other card in my wallet.
I love to rack up these points and then take advantage of one of Amex’s transfer bonuses to get even more value when it’s time to redeem for travel.
The current welcome bonus on the Amex Gold Card lets you earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases with your new card within the first six months of card membership. That welcome bonus is worth $1,200, according to our latest valuations.
However, you could be targeted for an even higher offer of 100,000 points on this card through CardMatch (offer subject to change at any time), so be sure to check there first.
