Low-cost airlines can get a bad rap. But when I think back to some of my longest delays and most disappointing cancellations, they were on traditional carriers and not their oft-maligned budget-friendly alternatives.
Sure, you may have heard (or experienced) a horror story here and there, but low-cost carriers are making some big changes that may inspire you to give them a second chance.
Spirit Airlines, for example, recently introduced a Go Comfy fare that guarantees a blocked middle seat for a more comfortable flight. It’s not the same level of low-cost luxury afforded to those who spring for a Big Front Seat, but you’ll enjoy more space than those who go with a base fare.
Frontier Airlines, another major player in the low-cost carrier segment, has also made a few appealing changes. The carrier closed out 2024 by announcing 16 new routes, first-class seats and the ability for high-level elite members to earn a companion pass.
Not to be outdone, Allegiant Air added 44 new routes and three new cities in a late 2024 expansion, bringing Colorado Springs Airport (COS), South Carolina’s Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) and Alabama’s Gulf Shores International Airport (GUF) into the fray.
In the spirit of “new year, new beginnings,” these stories may help you see low-cost carriers in a new light:
