If you think I’m not the kind of person who will log in to my Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards account every single day after I’ve booked a flight to see if the price has gone down, think again.
Southwest is far from the only airline that will offer you a credit if the price of your flight drops after you book a ticket. Most major airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and JetBlue, will offer you a refund in the form of a flight credit or cash, depending on your fare type. This usually applies to all fare classes except for basic economy.
A price change isn’t the only reason you may want to change your flight. If your travel plans change and you need to arrive at your destination earlier or on a different day altogether, you can change or cancel your flight for a full refund.
Whether you receive a credit to use on your new flight or cold, hard cash (OK, a refund to your credit card, but that doesn’t sound as cool) depends on your fare type. Again, you likely won’t be able to change or cancel your flight without a fee if you book the least expensive basic economy fare.
These stories can help you better understand when you are eligible for a refund and how to get it:
Now, go check your upcoming flights to see if the price has dropped, and let us know if you were able to get some money back. If it hasn’t dropped, be sure to set an alert using Google Flights in case it does.
