American adds 4 new routes, cuts 2 others and grows in Cape Cod
American Airlines is making a slew of changes to its domestic network.
The Fort Worth-based carrier recently filed plans to add four new routes and cut two others, as first seen in Cirium schedules and later confirmed by an airline spokesperson.
To start, the airline is growing in one of its newest outstations: Hyannis, Massachusetts. It's adding summer seasonal service from Chicago and Philadelphia.
The airline will add daily service from Philadelphia beginning June 19, 2025. Then, it'll add Saturday-only flights from Chicago June 21. Both flights will be operated by American Eagle affiliate Envoy Air onboard an Embraer E175 regional jet.
In addition to more flights to Cape Cod, the airline will launch two new limited-time routes for the spring break season. The airline will connect Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Springfield, Missouri, with Miami from Feb. 15, 2025, through March 29, 2025.

Both routes will operate exclusively on Saturdays for the peak spring break period, but it's possible they might get extended if there's enough demand. After all, American hasn't operated these flights before, so it might stimulate some flyers to take a trip to South Florida thanks to the new nonstop route.
That said, it's not all good news for American's network. The airline confirmed to TPG that it's pulling out of two seasonal markets effective immediately. This includes Charlotte to Spokane, Washington, and Chicago to Reno, Nevada. Both routes most recently operated as summer seasonal service, and they seemingly didn't perform well enough to warrant flying another season.
Of all the changes, the additions in Hyannis are perhaps the most interesting. That's because the airline launched service to Cape Cod Gateway Airport (HYA) this past summer with daily flights from New York City's LaGuardia Airport (DCA) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) near Washington, D.C.
Hyannis, which is on the Cape Cod peninsula, is a popular seasonal destination for summer vacationers who want to enjoy the region's best beaches.
American is the only global network airline serving Hyannis, so flyers will now have even more connecting opportunities to get to and from Cape Cod from hundreds of destinations worldwide.
It'll be interesting to see how the airline's new Chicago and Philadelphia routes perform. Until American's arrival, JetBlue long had a monopoly at this outstation with seasonal service to New York. Regional carrier Cape Air also flies to Hyannis from a few airports in the Northeast.
