If you’ve tried to use your points and miles to book business-class award flights, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced some frustrations.
For example, award availability can be hard to find. You might find phantom award space or extremely high rates. And some awards, such as Lufthansa business- and first-class seats, aren’t available through partners until just a few days before departure.
I enjoy the thrill and puzzle of finding and booking aspirational award flights at the best rate possible. But if you’re traveling with your family or don’t have much flexibility in your schedule, you may be interested in how to book business-class award flights with decent availability at a reasonable rate.
Luckily, some programs usually offer relatively ample business-class award space. One example is United Airlines MileagePlus, which often has partner awards you can book at decent rates (just watch out for mixed-cabin awards, which put you in economy on some flights).
While writing this email, I did a quick search for business-class awards on the United Airlines website for two people between New York and Istanbul for next February. My search uncovered one-way business-class flights bookable on most dates for 88,000 miles and less than $100 in taxes and fees per person. You might find lower rates through other programs, but United miles are easy to earn or transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards, and there’s often good availability.
