In a recent interview with CNBC conducted in the back of an Uber, company CEO Dara Khosrowshahi shared a couple of etiquette tips for passengers when ridesharing, including one that may come as a surprise.

When asked by Andrew Ross Sorkin about "proper etiquette for a passenger," Khosrowshahi says that if passengers are going to use their phone, the polite thing to do is ask your driver first if it's ok to do so. He makes the point that it's about respecting the driver, saying, "this is often an environment they are in for six, seven, or eight hours a day and I think that's important."

While a recent TPG Lounge poll showed that most of us prefer to ride in silence when taking a rideshare, others might not give a second thought to jumping on our phone while a driver takes you where you need to be. But, when getting in the back of a rideshare, we are essentially entering that person's office. It's doubtful that anyone likes the idea of a random stranger walking into their work space and jumping on the phone without a little warning.

Khosrowshahi's other point on passenger etiquette? "Don't slam the door." Simple enough.
