UPDATE: Continental is now a part of United.

Just a friendly reminder that the Continental Mileathon Promo began yesterday (Feb 1, 2011). The prizes are listed here:

and qualifying activies are listed here:

Mileathon Activies

If you've been waiting to get the 50,000 mile sign-up Continental credit card I wrote about here, you can now pull the trigger so you get the 20 points credit. Other low-hanging fruit "points", are signing up for Onepass and for emails. If you already receive Continental emails, you can simply create a new account, register it for Mileathon and then sign up for Continental emails.

Besides that, you need to book a bunch of somewhat expensive (the cheapest fare classes are excluded, see T&C below) Continental flights and/or hotels and rental cars in order to get far with this promotion. I won't take it seriously since most of my hotel and car rentals are through my corporate travel agency and I'd get no credit unless I book them through Continental.com.

However, if you have a bunch of flights to book and credit cards to open, the Mileathon promo can be a healthy bonus for your account.

However, if you are a miles and points hound like I am, I don't forsee this promotion being nearly as lucrative as the US Airways Grand Slam promotion, though I'll keep you updated on any easy-to-get Mileathon points.

Some key things to note on the Terms and Conditions of the promo:

Registration is required. This offer is not retroactive; credit accrual begins after the member registers for Mileathon. OnePass member must reside in the 48 contiguous United States. Residency is defined by the address on the OnePass account. The registered OnePass account number must be provided at the time of booking or purchase to earn Mileathon credits. Credits will be earned upon travel completion. Your Mileathon credits will accrue in addition to any miles you earn for qualifying OnePass activities. Reward earnings are not cumulative. Mileathon credits cannot be combined or transferred between OnePass accounts. Mileathon credits will automatically be converted to bonus miles and applied to your account eight to ten weeks after the promotion ends on April 30, 2011. If you earn enough Mileathon credits to choose a reward you will be notified in the May 2011 Mileathon activity report e-mail. Continental Airlines is not responsible for delayed partner reporting. Bonus miles do not count toward Elite qualification. All OnePass terms and conditions apply.

Purchasing tickets

Flight credits are earned on tickets purchased and flown in J, F, C, D, Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V and W fare classes. OnePass number must be provided at the time of booking. Credits will be earned upon travel completion. Travel must be completed between Feb. 1 and April 30, 2011, to qualify for credit. All qualifying travel must be for round-trip flights operated by Continental Airlines; Continental Express*; Continental Micronesia and Continental Connection** for which you are earning OnePass miles. Not valid on any other codeshare flights. One-way travel will qualify for half of the credit earning indicated for a specified fare class. Bonus miles do not count toward Elite qualification.
