Delta adds a dozen more Airbus A220-300s to its order book
Delta Air Lines deepend its embrace of the Airbus A220 on Tuesday by exercising options for 12 more of the larger A220-300 aircraft, bringing its total order to 62 of the -300 jets.
The order, which was announced at the Farnborough International Airshow outside of London, followed Delta's order on Monday for 100 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft.
Delta is the first U.S. airline to operate the A220, taking delivery of its first A220-100 in 2018. It currently operates 45 of the smaller variant, along with 11 of the larger -300s that have already been delivered. The dozen jets ordered on Tuesday will start to be delivered in 2026.
"These additional aircraft in the A220 family are an excellent investment for our customers and employees and will be fundamental as we work toward a more sustainable future for air travel," Delta senior vice president of fleet and technical operations Mahendra Nair said in a statement.
A flyer favorite? Here's why you'll love Delta's brand-new Airbus A220-300
"[I]t's clear the airline and its passengers are pleased with both the economy and comfort of the aircraft," Christian Scherer, chief commercial officer and head of Airbus International said. "The A220 bridges the gap between single-aisle and regional aircraft, and complements Delta's A320 family fleet by providing short field performance with long range."
Delta configures its A220-300 with 130 seats, including 12 in first class, 30 extra-legroom seats and 88 seats in the main economy cabin. Its A220-100s seat 109 passengers, including 12 in first class, 15 in extra-legroom seats and 82 in economy.
