Avelo is doubling down on its base in Wilmington, Delaware, announcing nine new routes from the city in what the carrier is calling its biggest single expansion since launching in 2021.

With the addition of nine new routes, Avelo will fly to a total of 14 cities from Wilmington. Avelo already operates flights to five Florida cities — Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Tampa and West Palm Beach — from Wilmington Airport (ILG).

The expansion also marks the largest number of destinations ILG has offered in its history, according to an Avelo spokesperson.

When Avelo arrived in Wilmington to great fanfare in February, it was unclear if the carrier would be successful in the city, which has typically only received intermittent commercial air service. The last carrier to serve ILG was Frontier Airlines, which left the airport in May 2022 and left Delaware as the only state without any commercial air service at the time.

However, since launching flights from Wilmington Airport, the ultra-low-cost carrier said it has seen strong customer demand — more than 25,000 customers have flown out of ILG within Avelo's first 90 days in the airport — prompting it to add a set of new routes from the city.

"The strong demand we are generating out of the gate is a testament to the convenient, affordable, reliable and caring air service Avelo has introduced since our airline took flight here in February," Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said in a statement.

Wilmington is Avelo's fourth base, following Burbank, California; New Haven, Connecticut; and Orlando. From Wilmington and New Haven, the carrier relies on the formula of serving little-used small airports in densely populated areas, operating flights from such areas to leisure destinations. With these routes, Avelo doesn't tend to experience any direct competition since it is often the only carrier there.

Delaware Gov. John Carney applauded Avelo's ambitious route expansion.

"We are grateful that Avelo will be expanding service here in Delaware, and we are excited to welcome more visitors to the First State," he said.

Here is a list of Avelo's nine new routes from ILG:

  • Charleston International Airport (CHS), starting June 23 and flying on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB), starting June 23 and flying on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), starting June 22 and flying on Thursdays and Sundays.
