The Bahamas is a perennial tropical destination favorite — who doesn't love white-sand beaches and crystal-blue ocean waters? Luckily, there's a great fare sale right now on nonstop flights to Nassau, home to popular resorts such as the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar and Atlantis, from select U.S. cities.

Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines are currently offering discounted, round-trip flights to the Bahamas from Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. However, keep in mind that the sale fares are for summer travel, which coincides with hurricane season. But we also found good prices on flights slated for the winter, which is the ideal time to visit the islands.

The discounted fares in this sale are for basic economy tickets. With Alaska and American, a carry-on is included, but not with JetBlue and United. A checked bag will cost around $35-$40 each way. In some cases with United, upgrading to an economy ticket may be more cost-effective than paying to check luggage. The upgrade will include a carry-on, seat selection and free schedule changes.

Sample flights

We found good availability in August for flights from the West Coast in this deal. JetBlue has nonstop fares out of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau for $366 round-trip. That's a solid discount for this route.

GOOGLE FLIGHTS

The best deals we found out of Los Angeles were for January travel. Alaska Airlines has round-trip flights out of LAX to NAS for as low as $361. With this ticket, you also get a free carry-on, so light packers can save the cost of checking a bag.

GOOGLE FLIGHTS

January is a great time to take advantage of this deal if you live in Washington, D.C. American Airlines has nonstop flights from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) to Nassau available for just $268 round-trip.

GOOGLE FLIGHTS

We found flights for an even lower price in December that depart from Dulles International Airport (IAD) on United. These fares were as low as $258 round-trip.

GOOGLE FLIGHTS

There are also good deals out of the nation's capital for a summer escape to the tropics. United has nonstop flights out of IAD to NAS from $263 round-trip in June and July.

Bottom line

After you book your trip, don't forget to pack your passport. While you can visit the Bahamas without a passport on certain cruises, you will need it when flying to the islands.
