Through Sept. 30, 2022, you can earn either 25 or 50 AAdvantage miles per dollar when donating between $25 and $10,000 to Stand Up to Cancer. Better yet, American Airlines is matching up to $1,000,000 in donations, doubling the effect of your donated funds.

The number of miles you'll earn depends on whether you have an American Airlines AAdvantage Mastercard® credit card. If you have an American Airlines cobranded Mastercard like the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®, you're eligible to earn 50 miles per dollar on your donation. Without a cobranded Mastercard, you'll earn 25 miles per dollar.

The information for the Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

It's important to note that donations to Stand Up to Cancer don't earn Loyalty Points, so while your donation can get you closer to an award flight redemption, you can't earn American Airlines elite status from a donation. Of course, if you hold an American Airlines cobranded credit card, you'll earn the standard 1 Loyalty Point per dollar on every purchase.

Since you earn miles on donations, any donation greater than $75 isn't tax deductible. But regardless, it's an easy way to earn miles while doing good.

Bottom line

If you hold an American Airlines cobranded Mastercard, you can earn 50 miles per dollar when donating to Stand Up to Cancer. This brings the purchase rate of American Airlines miles to 2 cents apiece, which is cheaper than the current "buy miles" purchase rate of American miles.

While 2 cents per mile is still more expensive than our valuation of American miles, donating to Stand Up to Cancer can be a great way to support an important cause while getting you closer to your next redemption.
