Who should (and shouldn’t) get the Capital One Venture X card?
Editor's Note
Since it first appeared on the scene back in 2021, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card quickly became one of the top travel rewards credit cards.
It offers tons of valuable perks, from lounge access and annual travel statement credits to anniversary bonus miles and a solid return on everyday spending.
That said, the card also carries a $395 annual fee, so you'll want to make sure you'll get enough from its benefits to justify keeping it year after year.
Here's how to decide whether the Venture X is right for you or whether a less-expensive option like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card might be a better fit.
Capital One Venture X decision guide — the quick version
Here's a quick decision tree for whether the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is right for you.
The Venture X is probably a good fit for you if …
- You travel at least a few times a year.
- You can use the card's $300 annual travel credit.
- You want premium travel perks without juggling numerous statement credits.
- You value airport lounge access.
- You like earning transferable points that you can redeem with several airlines and hotels.
The Venture X is probably not a good fit for you if …
- You rarely travel.
- You want a credit card with a low annual fee.
- You prefer earning cash back.
- You want lounge access at the widest range of airports.
- You don't expect to use enough of the card's benefits to justify its $395 annual fee.

Who should get the Venture X?
The Venture X works particularly well for travelers who can use its core benefits without going out of their way to do so.
You travel frequently and can use the annual travel credit
The single most valuable benefit of the Venture X is its up to $300 annual travel credit.
Every year you have the card, starting with your first year, you get up to $300 in credits to put toward things like airfare, hotel bookings and car rentals. The only condition is that you have to book your travel through Capital One Travel.
If you already spend at least $300 on travel each year and are comfortable booking through Capital One Travel, this benefit can offset a significant portion of the card's $395 annual fee.
You want transferable miles
Capital One miles are a very dynamic type of travel rewards currency. You can redeem them at a value of one cent apiece for bookings made through Capital One Travel, or apply them as a statement credit toward travel purchases you make with your Venture X card within 90 days.

TPG's August 2026 valuations tag the value of Capital One miles at 1.85 cents apiece, largely because you can transfer them to 15+ airline and hotel partners, including Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Accor Live Limitless.
If you're willing to learn these programs and search for award availability, the Venture X can be a strong fit.

You value (and can use) airport lounge access
The Venture X gives the primary cardholder access to Capital One Lounges and Landings and the ability to enroll in a Priority Pass membership for access to 1,300-plus participating lounges worldwide.
If you regularly travel through airports with Capital One locations, and have time to visit a lounge, this benefit can be tremendously helpful. But if you rarely fly through these specific airports and have tight connections, then you won't get much use out of it.

Keep in mind that Capital One's guest-access policies have become less generous, so travelers who frequently visit lounges with family or friends should consider that when evaluating the benefit.
And, like other airport lounges, Capital One's do get crowded, but at least you can join a virtual waiting list so you're not stuck queuing up for a long time before heading in.

You value travel protections and expedited airport security
The Venture X comes with a statement credit of up to $120 for a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee once every four years. If you already receive this benefit from another card, you can use your Venture X to pay for someone else's eligible application.

The Venture X also includes a suite of travel and purchase protections, including trip cancellation and interruption insurance, trip delay reimbursement, primary rental car coverage and cellphone protection.
These benefits can provide meaningful value when things go wrong, particularly if you travel frequently and use the card to pay for eligible purchases.
If you don't take too many trips, though, then this card might not be worth it for you.

You want simplicity in a premium card
Part of what makes the Venture X card so attractive is how simple its rewards-earning formula is.
On the earning side, the card accrues:
- 10 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
- 5 miles per dollar spent on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel
- 2 miles per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases

The 2-miles-per-dollar earning rate on other eligible purchases also makes the Venture X an easy catch-all card. My husband and I use it for purchases that don't earn bonus rewards on our other cards, such as car repairs, dry cleaning and insurance.
The straightforward travel statement credit, anniversary bonus miles and a strong base earning rate makes the Venture X appealing if you want premium travel benefits without managing numerous bonus categories or monthly and quarterly credits.

Who shouldn't get the Venture X?
The Venture X is an impressive card, but paying a $395 annual fee doesn't make sense if its biggest benefits don't match your travel habits.
You want a lower annual fee
While the Venture X's $395 annual fee is less than those of some other premium cards, it's still substantial.
If that's more than you want to pay each year, you might be better off with its younger sibling, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.
It earns 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar on other eligible purchases, while carrying a $95 annual fee.
What's more, the Venture card comes with the same Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee statement credit so you could come out ahead in the first year with that benefit alone.

You are only loyal to a single airline or hotel
While the value of Capital One miles lies in their versatility, if you devote every flight and every night to earning airline or hotel elite status, then you might be better off with a cobranded card whose earning and other benefits, such as free checked bags and priority boarding, might suit your travel habits better.
Lounge access is your main attraction
While Capital One's network of lounges is growing, there are still only a handful of Capital One-branded lounges (my favorite is the one at JFK thanks to its cheesemonger!).
Venture X cardholders also saw their guest access privileges pared back earlier this year, and you now have to pay to bring in most guests.

If lounge access, particularly when traveling with guests, is your top priority, compare the Venture X with cards that provide access to broader or different lounge networks.
For example, the American Express Platinum Card® gives cardmembers access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, which includes Amex Centurion and Priority Pass lounges (enrollment required) as well as Delta Sky Clubs (when flying Delta Air Lines; limited to 10 annual visits).
Which card is better will ultimately depend on the airports and airlines you use most.

You can't (or don't want to) leverage transfer partners
While Capital One miles are valuable for direct redemptions through Capital One Travel at a cent apiece, they can be worth multiples more when transferring to certain airline and hotel partners.
But that can be a lot of work. First, you've got to get familiar with those partner programs, then you've got to find high-value redemptions that work for you.
And while I have the desire to do that sort of travel sleuthing, it's not the best use of everyone's time.
If that doesn't appeal to you, a straightforward cash-back card may be a better fit. And if you still want to earn Capital One miles but don't need the Venture X's premium perks, the lower-annual-fee Venture could be a better compromise.

Bottom line
The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card can be a strong premium travel card for someone who travels regularly, can use the $300 annual travel statement credit and values benefits such as lounge access, transferable miles and travel protections.
That said, to make its $395 annual fee worth it, you've actually got to use its benefits, most notably the $300 annual travel statement credit for trips booked through Capital One Travel. If you can't do that and take advantage of a few other benefits, such as lounge access and Capital One's fantastic array of airline and hotel transfer partners, you might want to consider an easier-to-use card with a lower annual fee.
Ultimately, the question is simple: Will you naturally use enough of the Venture X's benefits to justify paying $395 each year? If the answer is yes, the card could deserve a spot in your wallet.
