Over the last couple of years, Citi has adjusted its credit card portfolio in an attempt to stay competitive with Chase and American Express. It’s probably time to take a fresh look at whether your current Citi credit cards are working for you, as well as whether any new Citi cards may be worth adding to your wallet. Today we’ll examine some of the best cards from our partners from Citi’s sizeable portfolio so you can decide.

Citi is a TPG advertising partner.

Why Trust Us?

At The Points Guy, our goal is to help you maximize your travel experiences while minimizing spending. Our travel and credit cards experts share their own experiences and give honest analyses to help you make decisions that benefit you the most. While we do receive compensation through our credit card application links, ads, and clearly indicated sponsored content, our editorial content, points valuations and card analysis are entirely our own.

Since 2010, TPG has been dedicated to helping you make informed credit card and travel decisions. We know that credit card rewards can unlock travel that changes lives, and we strive every day to help our readers achieve their financial and travel goals.

In addition to credit cards expertise, we have a variety of industry experts on our editorial team to help every reader make the best travel decisions available. We believe every redemption matters, whether someone is using points and miles to take a dream trip or looking to save money on holiday travel.

As our team and library of resources has grown, so has our influence in the industry. Our TPG Awards are a badge of honor that winning banks, hotel groups and airlines all wear proudly. Our dedication to producing honest reviews and helpful content for our readers is what allows readers and companies alike to place their trust in us.

Citi Rewards+® Card: Best for earning extra points

Sign-up bonus: Earn 25,000 ThankYou bonus points after you spend $1,500 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

This bonus is worth $250 in gift cards at Thankyou.com, although if you also have the Citi Premier or Citi Prestige it’s worth $450 based on TPG’s latest valuations

Rewards: For a limited time, earn 5x points per dollar on hotels, car rentals, and attractions (excluding air travel) booked on the Citi Travel℠ Portal through June 30, 2024. Earn 2 ThankYou points per dollar at supermarkets and gas stations on the first $6,000 you spend per year (1 point per dollar after that) and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. In addition, your points are rounded up to the nearest 10 points on every purchase with no caps. So, if you buy a cup of coffee for $2.31, that’s rounded up 10 points. And, if you spend $10.99 on lunch, that rounds up to 20 points.

Annual fee: $0.

Benefits: You’ll get 10% of your points back on the first 100,000 points you redeem each year. If JetBlue is your airline of choice, you can transfer your points directly to its TrueBlue loyalty program at a ratio of 5:4. Otherwise, you can get 1 cent per point in value when you redeem for gift cards. However, if you pair the Citi Rewards+ with the Citi Premier or Citi Prestige, the earnings can be combined into a single ThankYou Rewards account, thus making them transferable to Citi’s airline partners.

The Citi Rewards+ may be right for you if you’re looking for a contactless card that allows you to tap to pay. Note that the Rewards+ has a 3% foreign transaction fee though, so you’ll want to leave it at home when leaving the U.S.

Citi Double Cash Card: Best for flat-rate earning

Sign-up bonus: None

Rewards: 2% cash back on all purchases (1% when you buy; 1% when you pay).

Annual fee: $0.

Benefits: This is a no-frills card, but 2% cash back on all purchases makes it a good choice for an everyday spending card, especially because it comes with no annual fee. The cash back you earn can be redeemed as a check, a statement credit, a gift card or be deposited into your banking account. For these reasons, it has made our list of the best cash-back cards.

You can also convert cash back earned on the Citi Double Cash card to ThankYou Points via a linked ThankYou account. TPG values this solid cash-back card as one of the best rewards credit cards on the market because of its solid earning and flexibility. You’ll need an excellent credit score to get the Citi Double Cash Card though, and you won’t want to use this credit card for purchases outside the U.S. because it imposes a 3% foreign transaction fee.

The Citi Double Cash (see rates & fees) does offer an introductory 0% APR for 18 months on balance transfers made within the first four months of card opening (then a 18.99% – 28.99% variable APR applies), for a fee of 3% of each transfer (minimum $5). After that, your fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).

Recent changes to Citi Cards

Citi has made some significant changes to its cards over the last few years. Citi launched the Citi Custom Cash card in June 2021 and discontinued the application link for its ultra-premium Citi Prestige card. A few years ago, Citi eliminated many of the shopping and travel protections from its cards and refreshed the Citi Premier card — the list goes on. Some of the changes have been positive, such as improved earnings, while some card benefits and perks have slowly decreased.
