TPG reader Drew asked me on Facebook:

"I'm going on a honeymoon in April, 2015, and I'm trying to use Starpoints and Delta SkyMiles to make it more affordable. Because of its proximity to Atlanta, I was thinking Puerto Rico might be a good option. Would you recommend staying at the St. Regis Bahia Beach for 180,000 Starpoints or the W Retreat & Spa Vieques Island for 120,000 Starpoints?"

I love hearing stories about people using their miles and points to take amazing honeymoons. It's awesome to be a little extravagant and not have to pay for it (at least not in cash), especially after an expensive wedding.

TPG reader Drew is based in Atlanta, and is trying to decide where he wants to stay for his upcoming honeymoon in Puerto Rico. He has narrowed his choices down to the St. Regis Bahia, which I have heard is spectacular (180,000 Starpoints), and the W Vieques (120,000 Starpoints).

W Vieques
W Vieques

I stayed at the W Vieques for a long weekend a while ago. The island is very interesting island and not very built up. You can spot wild horses, there are beautiful beaches, and it's rather unspoiled. The hotel itself I had a few issues with; for example, the WiFi was spotty. However my stay came shortly after it had opened a few years ago, so things may be running more smoothly now. Keep in mind that getting to Vieques will cost you about $250 per person by air (a harrowing experience, as the planes are tiny and the ride is bumpy). A boat costs less, but takes longer, so you have to balance your time and budget.

I haven't personally been to the St. Regis Bahia Beach but many friends have (including TPG Content and Community Manager Ryan Gaines), and I've heard it's spectacular.

Both resorts have a $60 per day resort fee, so they're tied in that respect, but if you really want to go all out and have a truly luxurious vacation, I'd say go with the St. Regis. If you prefer something a little off the beaten path to explore a more exotic setting, I'd pick the W Vieques. Saving those 60,000 points is like saving $1,200, so even spending $500 for the extra flights, you'll still come out ahead.

I'm sure either way you'll have a wonderful honeymoon. TPG readers, help a fellow TPG reader out, and if you've been to either of these hotels, please share your experiences in the comments section below.
