Hi TPG readers! It’s Gene Sloan, TPG’s cruise director, taking over the daily newsletter today in the wake of a recent trip to Japan to offer some advice: Don’t rule out a cruise when thinking about off-the-beaten-path travel.
If you haven’t looked over cruise line schedules in a while, you might be surprised by how many far-off places you can reach by ship these days, including — as I experienced firsthand on my recent Princess cruise — some of the more remote parts of Japan.
The trip included a complete circling of the country on a Princess ship that delivered me to all sorts of fascinating places beyond the traditional tourist hubs of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, from Toyama — gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed mountain village of Shirakawa-go — to the historic cities of Nagasaki, Akita and Tsuruga.
And it did so in a relaxed, “only unpack once” sort of way that was far more pleasant than if I had tried to crisscross the country on my own.
It’s not the only cruise I’ve taken lately that has delivered me to a place many people don’t even realize you can reach by ship — everywhere from the ruins of Troy (if you loved The Odyssey, this is one to book) to the spectacular Spanish city of Seville (yes, Seville is reachable by cruise ship, even though it’s 50 miles inland on a river).
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for the ultimate in off-the-beaten-path travel by ship, don’t miss my story about traveling to the North Pole on a luxury icebreaker. It may very well have been the most epic trip I’ve ever taken, by land or sea.
