The real truth, and how you can actually save cash

It’s time for some good old-fashioned myth-busting.
We’ve all heard the old tales about saving money on travel: book flights on a Tuesday at midnight, clear your browser cookies for better fares or snag the cheapest deal the moment schedules open. Sorry to burst the bubble, but those things are all untrue.
Forget the Tuesday-at-midnight trick
Airline and hotel prices are constantly changing thanks to dynamic pricing, and there’s no magic day or hour to book. It’s when you travel that really matters.
The cookie myth won’t save you
Another persistent myth: airlines are tracking your searches and raising prices just for you. There’s no evidence of that.
And don’t assume budget airlines are automatically the cheapest. Once you add bag fees, seat assignments and other charges, low-cost carriers can actually be more expensive than some major airline fares (especially if you have a co-branded credit card that provides some of those perks).
Lounges and upgrades aren’t just for elites
Cheap paid upgrades are everywhere these days, which is actually leaving a lot fewer complimentary upgrades for elite status members. I’ve been able to buy upgrades to first class from New York to Seattle on Alaska Airlines for just $200!
