It can be frustrating to be in an airline’s rewards program, only to never see your loyalty pay off with, say, the occasional upgrade to a better seat.
Unfortunately, those are harder to come by these days, in large part because airlines have been a lot more successful in selling upgrades to the highest bidder, leaving fewer and fewer for loyalists.
Still, if you want to avoid paying for an upgrade, there are things you can do to tip the odds in your favor.
