Global oil prices are on the rise, with many airlines already passing fuel surcharges on to passengers in the form of higher airfare.
Luckily, there are a few ways to combat soaring fares and save on flights if you’re a bit strategic.
Here are five tactics I recommend:
No. 1: Book your summer travel now
Prices may continue to rise, so I recommend booking summer fares as soon as possible. This is especially true if you’re flying in June or July, when prices (and travel demand) are historically higher. Consider booking a trip for August, when travel demand — and fares — tend to be lower.
No. 3: Combine one-way flights instead of booking a round trip
Don’t assume a round-trip ticket is always the cheapest option. Searching one-way flights separately can uncover better deals, let you mix airlines or give you the flexibility to depart on different days for maximum savings.
No. 4: Check nearby airports and alternative routes
No. 5: Reprice your flights (yes, even after you book)
This is one of the most underrated tricks. Every couple of weeks, I’ll quickly recheck the exact flight I booked. If the price drops, I can often rebook and get the difference (in points or cash) back as a credit. It takes just a few minutes, and I’ve easily saved hundreds of dollars doing this over the years.
Bottom line: Rising airfare is news no one wants to hear, but a few smart habits can add up to serious savings.
