Or is it? Because today’s news is a bit of a bummer.
Based on our own searches and other reporting, we’re seeing a sharp rise in Hilton Honors’ award pricing, with standard room rates at several high-end properties jumping 33% or more.
We are also seeing standard award night rates at more properties now fluctuate from day to day — an indication that they may become more dynamic going forward. While it wasn’t uncommon for premium room redemptions to be all over the place, standard room rates were typically more, well, standard.
Changes like this definitely sting and can feel like a big setback if you’ve been saving your points for that perfect trip.
But, luckily for you, we’ve got the playbook for staying ahead in the points and miles game. Let’s review a few quick do’s and don’ts:
Focus on transferable credit card points. You can get much more value and flexibility when you earn these with your spending than when you’re focused on a single rewards program. (Don’t forget, American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Hilton Honors at a 1:2 ratio.)
Get a cobranded credit card that comes with elite status. This could help you get room upgrades and earn more bonus points.
Take advantage of free nights. There is still big value to Hilton’s free night certificates, which can be used for a standard night at any property. And Hilton elite members can enjoy the fifth-night-free benefit when booking reward stays.
Don’t do something impulsive. Don’t get fed up and burn through your stash of Hilton points on Amazon purchases. You’d be far more guilty of devaluing your points than they are at this point.
Here are some resources to help you understand this latest devaluation and continue to maximize the value of your points:
