Through Dec. 31, American Express Membership Rewards participants can take advantage of a 40% bonus when transferring points to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.
That means with a simple transfer, your 21,000 Amex points could quickly become more than 29,000 Virgin Atlantic points — which is how many points TPG Managing Editor Madison Blancaflor needed last month for a one-way flight from New York to London in Virgin’s Upper Class (business-class) cabin. (Note: The transfer bonus Madison used last month was with Chase Ultimate Rewards, while the current 40% transfer bonus available is through Amex Membership Rewards.)
That was after Virgin Atlantic made headlines with a recent shift to less predictable dynamic award pricing. In some cases, that’s meant much pricier redemptions. But we’re also seeing lots of cheap Saver award deals you can snag if your plans are flexible — and especially if you’re willing to travel during the lower-demand months.
Case in point: I’m seeing one-way transatlantic economy-class seats in January starting as low as 6,000 points. Just watch out for the taxes and fees, which, while recently lowered in the repricing, can still be exorbitant on some itineraries.
Booking through Flying Club, you can reserve seats to London, or through Heathrow Airport en route to other destinations in Europe. Or, in some cases, you can book seats aboard Virgin’s SkyTeam partners like Air France, KLM and Delta Air Lines, too.
