Hidden gems in Puerto Rico

by Andrew Kunesh, Senior Reporter, Cards & Loyalty

For me, Puerto Rico is both home and paradise, and you don’t even need a passport to travel there from the mainland U.S. The island practically pulses with culture, history and unforgettable experiences. As a local, I see Puerto Rico’s true magic: its music, flavors and breathtaking sights that make it a destination worth discovering.

Even as a local, I am constantly discovering (or rediscovering) new treasures. The Cannon Club in Old San Juan, for instance, is my favorite escape – a piano bar where the nights are filled with live music performed by talented locals. Dine inside and be immersed in the melodies, or sit outdoors surrounded by lush greenery under the Caribbean stars. For an authentic taste of Puerto Rican cuisine, Casita Miramar feels like stepping into a beautifully restored, historic home. (Pro tip: If you have the American Express® Gold Card, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, you might be eligible to take advantage of your card’s Resy statement credits when dining here! Enrollment required.)

Our nightlife is a vibe, too. La Grieta, a mezcal lover’s den, captures Puerto Rico’s soulful, eclectic spirit. Dimly lit with a lounge area and an almost-hidden bar where DJs spin vinyl, it’s a true gem for music aficionados.

Beyond San Juan, Puerto Rico’s natural beauty shines. Skip Rincón’s crowds and head to Buyé Beach, Playa Sucia or Peña Blanca for crystal-clear waters. For adventure, head to the east coast and sail from Fajardo to the uninhabited islet of Cayo Icacos, or hike El Yunque’s biodiverse rainforest trails. And in Cayey’s mountains, you’ll find cool breezes and sweeping views — an escape few tourists experience.

Puerto Rico’s beauty runs deep, woven into every story, sunset and sultry evening. Come experience it yourself.

TPG tip: If you want to use your miles to fly to San Juan, a great tip is to check award availability via Turkish Miles & Smiles for United-operated flights. When available, these awards are priced the same as flights within the lower 48 states at just 10,000 Turkish miles each way. You can also use British Airways Avios to fly on American Airlines-operated flights from Miami to San Juan for 16,000 Avios each way.
