During my time at TPG, it’s been ingrained in me that it doesn’t usually make sense to buy points and miles. TPG’s valuations usually show that the price per point or mile is not worth the cost. But as with most things in life, there’s an exception to every rule.
Typically, Aeroplan points cost about 2.58 cents each, but during the promotion, the per-point cost drops to 1.29 cents. TPG values Aeroplan points at 1.5 cents each, so you can save money by purchasing points during this promotion and redeeming them for your next trip.
For example, you need just 60,000 Aeroplan points to fly business class from New York to European destinations like Zurich, Geneva and Frankfurt this summer. If you purchase 60,000 points for about $1,540 to receive the 100% bonus, you’ll receive 120,000 points total — more than enough to cover your business-class flight to Europe for potentially thousands less than you’d pay in cash. Based on your dates and routes, 120,000 points could be enough to cover your return flight, too. Keep in mind that you will still be responsible for any taxes and fees.
Aeroplan’s current promotion is just one example of when it makes sense to buy points. Next time your preferred airline or hotel brand is offering a bonus on points purchases, take a few minutes to determine whether you’ll come out ahead by buying points versus paying cash.
These stories can help you understand when it makes sense to purchase points so you’ll be ready when the time comes:
