United’s service from its hub at Newark marks the first-ever to the city on the “heel” of Italy by a U.S. carrier. Bari is now United’s sixth destination in Italy, with the airline hoping the surrounding Puglia region can take its place alongside Rome, Milan, Venice and other Italian destinations that Americans can’t seem to get enough of.

I’ll close this week with the sad story of Spirit Airlines. The carrier that helped redefine budget air travel in America abruptly shut down early Saturday, unable to overcome rapid changes in the aviation industry since the pandemic that left it hemorrhaging cash and unable to recover.
