One budget airline abruptly went out of business while questions about the future of another continue to swirl. American Airlines’ smallest jets are about to get a major overhaul. And Southwest Airlines’ expansion spree continued with another new destination.
It’s been another busy week for airline news, so let’s dive in.
Elsewhere, there’s one less budget airline flying from the U.S. after Icelandic discounter Play Airlines went out of business last week.
However, most eyes in the U.S. are on Spirit Airlines. Its future remains uncertain after the carrier filed for bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year. The airline has made drastic cuts and revealed plans to get rid of more than 100 jets — more than half its fleet!
Still, some recent updates suggest the carrier may still have a chance to avoid liquidation. TPG’s Sean Cudahy has everything you need to know about booking a ticket on Spirit right now.
And I’ll close with Southwest, which will add Alaska to its route map. Anchorage — the state’s biggest city — becomes the fifth new destination Southwest has announced this year.
