Are you ready for the Fourth of July? America’s Independence Day is synonymous with fireworks and backyard cookouts. This year, it could also take on a new superlative: America’s busiest holiday for air travel.
It’s expected that the nation’s all-time record could be broken in the coming days as Americans take to the skies around July 4. Whether the record is broken or not, we can say one thing for certain: The holiday rush is not off to a good start for air travelers. TPG’s Sean Cudahy writes that more than 40,000 departures have been scrapped or delayed since Saturday, with more likely to come today.
As for other headlines since our last newsletter, no one had a busier stretch than Delta Air Lines.
The carrier topped TPG’s Best Airlines rankings for the seventh year in a row, edging out United Airlines for the No. 1 spot. Delta also opened a new Delta One lounge in Seattle and announced two long-haul routes to Europe. Paul Baldoni, Delta’s new network planning chief, also gave hints on other things to watch for. That came in a talk with TPG’s Zach Griff that touched on everything from fleet plans to the possibility of a new hub.
