And Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines are modifying some of the fees that they have long been known for.
It’s been a busy two weeks in airline news. Here’s what you’ve missed since our last Aviation newsletter.
American Airlines is adding eight routes to destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America, including new service to Barbados, St. Maarten and the Dominican Republic.
Back east, Breeze founder David Neeleman said Providence will soon become the airline’s biggest base— and maybe become the carrier’s launchpad for international service.
There are also some cuts to tell you about. United Airlines is pumping the brakes on its aggressive transpacific growth, pausing two routes to Australia and New Zealand. Cuts are also on the menu at JetBlue, which is trimming its international schedule to London and Paris and its domestic schedule from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
Speaking of Frontier, it and fellow “ultra-low-cost carrier” Spirit surprisingly announced this week that they were relaxing change fees and restructuring other add-on charges. You can see details on the changes at Frontier and Spirit — though it’s not yet clear if these changes mark the beginning of a kinder, gentler brand of budget carrier.
I’ll leave it there for now. Safe travels to all, and I’ll see you here again in two weeks.
