Severe Weather Causes Nearly 5,000 Delays, More Than 1,000 Cancellations Along the East Coast

The East Coast of the US has been the recipient of severe weather within the past day. With the news already bad, it doesn’t appear to be getting much better.
Air travelers around the country have been facing supreme delays and cancellations on Monday. As of 5:00pm, there have been 4,979 delays on flights within, into or out of the United States. Moreover, a total of 1,063 of flights within, into or out of the US have been canceled.
Looking at the day’s numbers for airlines, Southwest Airlines has been the airline with the highest number of canceled or delayed flights. A total of 206 (4%) Southwest flights have been canceled and 756 (17%) flights have been delayed. Following Southwest, a total of 132 (3%) American Airlines flights have been canceled, and 691 (19%) of the carrier’s daily flights have been delayed.
Based on airports, the usual suspects have seen the highest number of cancellations and delays — LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR). A total 201 flights originating at or traveling to LGA have been canceled and a total of 494 daily flights have been delayed. Meanwhile, across town at Newark (EWR), a total of 172 flights into or out of the airport have been canceled and 437 have been delayed. Things still look bleak for EWR flyers continuing into the evening, too. Arriving flight delays are averaging just under five hours.
Struggles aren’t just limited to the Northeast, either. Both Miami (MIA) and Charlotte (CLT) reported ground stops at some point on Monday.
And Fort Lauderdale (FLL) warned of delays of up to an hour.
As of time of publication, no major US airline has issued weather waivers throughout the East Coast. However, if you’re traveling to or from the region within the next couple of days, it’ll be best to check with your airline to see if a weather waiver is issued.
In addition, if you’re traveling throughout the East Coast on Monday and into Tuesday, it’s recommended to check with your airline to see if your flight is on time before heading to the airport.
Remember, airlines aren’t going to be responsible for paying for your meals or hotels in the case of weather-related delays/cancellations.
