Watch the Trailer for "Sully," a Movie About Miracle on the Hudson
On a winter day seven years ago, US Airways Flight 1549 lost power in both of its engines just after take off from LaGuardia Airport and plummeted towards the ground. But Captain Sully Sullenberger successfully ditched the plane in the Hudson River, in one of the most high-profile water landings in aviation history. The "Miracle on the Hudson," as it became known, is now the subject of a Hollywood film staring Tom Hanks and directed by Clint Eastwood.
And if the actor and director aren't famous enough for you to be convinced this is worth seeing, check out the first official trailer above. It's seriously awesome. Aviation geeks should also be relieved to learn that the movie looks to be fairly accurate, using the correct US Airways livery, interior and exterior of the A320 plane.
But despite the the accuracies in the aircraft itself, other shots are not quite as on point. For example, this snapshot of the tarmac at LaGuardia Airport shows American's new livery which was not rolled out until 2013, four years after the incident. You can also see United planes in their post-merger livery, even though United and Continental did not even agree to merge until a year after flight 1549 made headlines just a few miles from LGA. And the Southwest plane taxing should not be there either — Southwest didn't announce plans to serve Laguardia airport until April of 2009, three months after the incident. Judging by the aircraft on the tarmac and the new control tower operating, this particular airport footage is probably less than a year old.
Despite those flaws, the acting really does look superb. The movie premieres in theaters on September 9.
