It's no secret that United MileagePlus and Marriott Bonvoy have a reciprocal partnership called RewardsPlus.

This partnership grants mid and upper-tier United MileagePlus Premier elites Mariott Bonvoy Gold Elite status. Additionally, top-tier Marriott Bonvoy Titanium and Ambassador Elite members are able to request a status match to United Airlines Premier Silver.

Today, we'll discuss how United elites can status match to Marriott Bonvoy with just a few clicks. And if you're a top-tier Marriott elite, check out this previous edition of Quick Points for a guide to claiming your free United Premier Silver status.

How to get Marriott Gold Elite with United status

MARRIOTTBONVOY.UNITEDMILEAGEPLUS.COM

First things first: You'll need a Marriott Bonvoy account. So, create an account if you don't already have one.

Once you've located your account, you can sign up for Marriott Gold Elite status here. Remember, this match is open to all MileagePlus Premier Gold, Platinum, 1K and Global Service members.

You will be required to enter your MileagePlus number, password and email address and agree to the terms and conditions. Then, you'll be asked for your Marriott Bonvoy number. Your Marriott Bonvoy status will be updated with Gold Elite status within a couple of days of submittal.

Some of the noteworthy benefits of Marriott's Gold Elite status include:

  • Space-available upgrades to enhanced rooms at check-in at most Marriott Bonvoy rooms. This may include rooms on higher floors, rooms with special amenities or rooms on the executive floor, but not suites.
  • 2 p.m. late checkout, subject to availability.
  • 25% bonus points on paid Marriott stays.
  • Complimentary enhanced internet.
  • Welcome gift of normally either 250 or 500 bonus points.

Normally, this status requires 25 nights to earn, but it's also included with various Marriott cobrand credit cards and The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Bottom line

If you have Premier Gold or higher status with United, there's no harm in doing a quick status match to Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite. Unfortunately, if you're a top-tier Premier 1K or Global Services member, the RewardsPlus partnership doesn't match upper elites to any status higher than Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite.

Likewise, Marriott Bonvoy Titanium and Ambassador members should take advantage of Premier Silver status on United. While there's no guarantee that it will provide any first-class upgrades, it's nice to have its various perks for when you travel on United.

The Marriott/United status match is a great example of a lesser-known benefit that your status provides.
