The Federal Aviation Administration has issued ground delays for flights out of LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as a torrential downpour soaks the tri-state area.

LaGuardia also closed Terminal A — where Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines operate — as a result of the flooding caused by the rain. Spirit is not operating flights out of LaGuardia until 3 p.m., and Frontier is operating its remaining flights out of Terminal C.

Of the three airports, LaGuardia led in cancellations, reporting that 24% of flights out of the airport had been canceled by 3:25 p.m., according to flight tracking site FlightAware. JFK was also experiencing mounting delays, tallying around 13% of canceled flights out of the airport.

Newark seemed to be the least impacted by the floods, with only had only four flight cancellations as of Friday afternoon, according to FlightAware.

Torrential rain swept over New York City Friday morning. Brooklyn has already received over a month's worth of rain, which is more than 4 inches, according to CNN. The tri-state area has seen 1 to 2 inches of rainfall per hour, and the National Weather Service warns that parts of the area could experience more than 8 inches of rain.

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in New York City as the rain flooded subways and roads. The state of emergency described the rain as "dangerous and life-threatening," and Hochul advised residents in the New York City, Hudson Valley and Long Island areas to avoid flooded roads.
