Airlines around the world launch and announce dozens of new flight routes and service changes every month. NEW ROUTES LAUNCHED IN AUGUST 2018
New Domestic and International Flights on Southwest Airlines (launched August 7)

Details — It's been a big month for Southwest, which launched several new domestic and international flights, including a new transcon route between Los Angeles (LAX) and Tampa, Florida (TPA). The airline also began daily routes between Atlanta (ATL) and Nashville (BNA), Cincinnati (CVG) and Denver (DEN) and Hartford (BDL) and St. Louis (STL), as well as a fun new international route from Baltimore (BWI) to Cancun (CUN), which will be operated by the carrier's 737 MAX 8.

Primera Air Begins Flying from Washington, DC to London (launched August 22)

Details — Folks on the East Coast now have the chance to fly from Washington, DC (IAD), to London Stansted Airport (STN), located about an hour's drive from the city center, thanks to a new route launched this month by low-cost-carrier Primera Air. You can catch nonstop service five times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays aboard the carrier's brand new Airbus A321neo aircraft.

Avianca Adds Flights from Orlando to Latin America (launched August 1 and 2)

Details — Earlier this month, Avianca began offering nonstop options between Orlando (MCO) and three popular Latin American cities: Lima (LIM), San Salvador (SAL) and Guatemala City (GUA). Service from MCO-LIM operates daily, while the MCO-SAL route runs four times per week on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (return trips are Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) and the MCO-GUA route runs three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (with return trips on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays). All three new routes are aboard the airline's A319s.

Details — Frontier Airlines launched a whopping 43 flights this month, including nonstop service from Memphis (MEM) to San Antonio (SAT), Jacksonville (JAX) to Las Vegas (LAS) and Pittsburgh (PIT) to San Diego (SAN), among others. The new routes will be operated by a mix of the carrier's A319, A320 and A321 aircraft. So if you've been wanting to explore more of the US or visit nearby Calgary in Canada, get to it!

NEW ROUTES ANNOUNCED IN AUGUST 2018
American Airlines to Add Nine More Routes from US to Europe

Details — As JT Genter reported last week, American Airlines recently announced a number of European routes that are expected to launch in 2019, including nonstop service from the US to Munich (MUC), Dublin (DUB), Athens (ATH), Edinburgh (EDI), Berlin (TXL), London (LHR), Bologna (BLQ) and Dubrovnik (DBV), which you may recognize as King's Landing on Game of Thrones. The Dallas and Chicago routes will be operated by Dreamliners — 787-8s for the flights to Munich and Athens, with a 787-9 for the Dublin route — while a 757 will service the PHL-EDI route and 767s will service the PHL-BLQ and PHL-DBV routes. Flights from CLT-MUC will be operated by an A330-200, while those from PHX-LHR will use AA's 777-200 aircraft.

Delta to Debut New Flights to Seoul, Tel Aviv and Europe

Details — Not to be outdone by American Airlines, Delta also announced a series of new routes to Europe this month — as well as to Seoul and Tel Aviv — that are set to launch next spring. While no official start date for the JFK-TLV and JFK-CDG routes was listed in Delta's official press release, it seems the MSP-ICN service is expected to begin April 1, while the LAX to CDG and AMS routes are slated for June 16, and TPA-AMS for May 23. A newly refurbished 777 will service flights to Seoul, while updated 777s and A330-300s will be featured on the flights to Europe and Tel Aviv, respectively.

Even More Domestic Routes Coming Soon to Frontier Airlines

Details — As if August wasn't a busy enough month for Frontier Airlines, it had to go and announce a ton of new seasonal routes expected to launch between November 2018 and January 2019, including service to its 100th destination — Harlingen Valley International Airport (HRL) in Texas. Ranging from international flights to Punta Cana (PUJ) to more state-side options including new flights from Tucson, the new routes will be aboard a mix of the carrier's A319, A320 or A321 aircraft. Translation: If you've been waiting for an excuse to plan an autumn or wintertime getaway, this is it.

United to Add More Flights to Europe and Beyond in 2019

Details — United announced plans this month for another gateway to Israel, this time from Washington, DC (IAD) to Tel Aviv (TLV) beginning May 22, 2019. Pending government approval, the new route will run three times per week, with flights leaving IAD on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and returning from TLV on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday aboard United's 777-200ER aircraft. In addition to the Tel Aviv announcement, the airline shared details of further expansion in Europe in 2019.

Canadian Airline Swoop Announces Its First US Destinations

Details — Low-cost carrier WestJet's ultra-low-cost offspring Swoop recently announced plans to expand to the US later this year, with flights from Canada's Abbotsford (YXX) — located about an hour from Vancouver — Edmonton (YHM) and Hamilton (YHM) to Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Phoenix expected to launch in mid-October.

KLM to Offer Nonstop Service Between Boston and Amsterdam in 2019

Details — Attention anyone in the Northeast who's interested in windmills, canals, bike rides in beautiful places, wooden clogs or anything else you might find intriguing about a certain Dutch capital: KLM recently announced it'll be bringing back its nonstop transatlantic hop from Boston (BOS) to Amsterdam (AMS) for the first time since 1994. The route will be operated by KLM's A330-300 three times a week on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday starting March 31, 2019, before increasing to four flights a week — Monday is added to the mix — on July 1, 2019.

Details — Great news for any country music fans out there: Sun Country is about to make it easier to get to the center of all the action in Nashville. Keep an eye out for six nonstop seasonal routes connecting BNA with Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP), Fort Myers (RSW), Miami (MIA), Orlando (MCO), Tampa (TPA) and New Orleans (MSY) that are expected to launch this fall — and don't forget to pack your cowboy boots.
